What’s more important than trying to get more clients?
- Getting great clients that truly respect you
- Maintaining your sense of integrity
Neither are accomplished by using marketing strategies that feel “off” to you.
Although some people will buy when we resort to hype and manipulation, it increases doubt about our integrity, in our buyer’s mind, and in ours. The best clients will be pushed away.
This is marketing from desperation energy.
Unfortunately, many businesses are built this way. They have to turn around later to dismantle their “success” and unlearn a lot, feeling like years have been lost. This was true of my first 5 years in business: learning and practicing the conventional strategies of internet marketing. I made money, but I also burned out, and wasted years not growing a real and lasting audience.
Instead, with a little more patience, you can build an authentic business that thrives.
By being willing to work patiently and with joy, you will eventually get results that you are proud of… instead of falling into desperation energy and hacking a shallow success that falls apart.
Practice being aware of your internal state as you work — where is it along the spectrum of joy or desperation? — then you can then consciously choose. The choice is made everyday, sometimes many moments in a day.
May you always choose integrity, self-respect, and spiritual alignment.
How To Have A Great Business
As someone who has had more than a thousand clients, I can tell you this:
Your business will shine when you have great customers.
On the other hand, misaligned clients/customers will make you feel like you aren’t skillful, that you aren’t making a difference, that maybe you’re just taking money without offering adequate value back to them.
When we market from a desperation energy, we attract misaligned clients… if we get any clients at all.
“Great” clients are naturally attracted to you when you do your marketing from an energy of integrity and genuine confidence. If however they sense desperation, great clients will go elsewhere.
Protect Your Life Energy
It’s not just about having your business shine. It’s also about how you are using your limited life energy.
Are you dissipating your energy in desperately trying to pay your bills or achieve some number that makes you feel successful? Or are you wisely spending your life energy in building genuine confidence by creating and sharing authentic content?
Are you gladly using your life energy to work with clients that make you shine? Or losing energy with people who don’t really appreciate your work?
What about Paying the Bills?
Some of you reading this might be wondering… “Yes, but I *do* need my business to pay the bills asap…”
If your business isn’t paying the bills yet, you’re probably putting an unrealistic requirement to get it profitable ASAP. And that’s where the desperation energy is coming from.
First secure a way to pay the bills that doesn’t compromise your integrity. Whether that’s driving Lyft/Uber, or working for a Fortune 500, or serving coffee at Starbucks, you can pay the bills and practice bringing mindfulness to your work all day long. Then, in the evenings/weekends, spend disciplined time to build your authentic business.
Or perhaps you are fortunate enough to have family that can financially support you while you build your business affordably.
If you haven’t yet, I recommend taking my Intro to Authentic Business Course (only $25) that gives a list of recommended expenditures for an authentic business (less than $300/month) and a step by step marketing plan that works.
By not requiring your business to produce miracles, it is more likely to. Let your business grow at its own best pace, which is connected to your own personal growth and integrity.
Be Choosy about Your Clients
Do you randomly invest your money in whatever opportunity comes along?
You are choosy with where your money goes.
What’s more important than your money is your energy. Be super choosy with whom you allow your energy to go to.
When you’re first starting out, and you have lots of space for clients, you might not know how to choose. It’s ok to try accepting different kinds of clients. Over time, you’ll learn about the kinds of people with whom you work best. You’ll also come to be aware of which red flags you can sense early on with someone that shows you they aren’t ideal for your business at this time.
Think of yourself as forming a transformational partnership with your clients. You’re investing your limited time and energy to help someone truly improve their life and make a greater positive impact in their world. Be choosy.
Be curious about who among your audience will really understand the unique opportunity of being in a transformational partnership with you.
Everyday, return to your Source of authentic joy and confidence. Remember that everything is actually, deeply perfect and beautiful, and that your destiny is complete understanding, creativity, love, and authentic power.
From that energetic position, (1) Create authentic content consistently. (2) Distribute it effectively to your warm and likely audiences. Then (3) occasionally announce your services, not with a promotional/salesy place, but from a spirit of authentic confidence. Let those who understand, step forward.
5 years ago, after my breakdown and breakthrough, I began doing exactly this: consistently distributing my authentic content, with occasional announcements.
Within 1 year I had a full client load again, and within 2 years I noticed that I no longer had to announce my 1–1 openings anymore, because I now had a waiting list.
With authentic marketing, you will also get to the place where all you need to do is to whisper your offerings, and your genuine audience will step forward.
